A scenic seafront, not a slog.
Setting off from George Town, the simplest route hugs the coast. You leave the heritage core, pick up Gurney Drive at the seafront and follow it westwards — the strait on your right, the row of high-rise condominiums on your left. On a clear afternoon you can see the mainland and the tankers in the channel; on a moody monsoon day the sky over the water is the prettiest thing in Penang.
Continue past Pulau Tikus, where Gurney Drive bends into Jalan Tanjong Tokong. You'll roll past Island Plaza on your left and the row of shophouse cafés on your right. Island 88 is a few minutes further along — a glass-fronted building set back slightly from the road, with the UFOREA wordmark on the upper floors. The whole drive is one road, one bend, no expressway. Even with a stroller in the back and a curious six-year-old asking questions, it's done in fifteen minutes.
Make it a Penang Sunday.
If you're coming from George Town, the most enjoyable visits we hear about are the half-day ones — breakfast in the heritage core, three hours at UFOREA, dinner back in town. Here's the pattern that works:
- 9:00 — Breakfast in George Town. Toh Soon for kopi and kaya toast, or Sup Hameed for nasi kandar. The kids get fed and the adults get caffeinated before the trip.
- 10:15 — Set off along Gurney Drive. Aim to be at UFOREA right at opening. The first hour is the quietest, the costume rotation in Makeover Castle is fresh, and the parents' lounge has the prime sofa spots empty.
- 10:30 – 13:30 — UFOREA. Three hours covers the highlights — Discovery Cove, Makeover Castle, Cozy Nook for a sit-down — without the kids melting. Stamp the wristband on the way out.
- 14:00 — Lunch break in Tanjong Tokong. The row of cafés five minutes from Island 88 has dim sum, char koay teow, and Western for the picky eater. Wristband stamp valid all day — re-enter when you're done.
- 15:30 — One more round, or head back. Most families come back for a quieter second pass at the zones the kids loved most. Drive back along Gurney as the sun starts dropping — the seafront in late afternoon is the photo you didn't plan to take.
Island 88 has a multi-level car park directly under the building. Take the lift to our floor. First hour is free; a small flat rate after that. There's a sheltered drop-off lane at the lobby — useful on a sudden afternoon downpour.
