The bridge crossing is half the adventure.
Setting off from Butterworth, the route depends on how you cross. Most families take Bridge 1 — the original Penang Bridge — because it lands you closer to the north of the island. From the Bagan Ajam interchange it's a straight shot west across the strait. The kids will spend most of the 13 km with their faces pressed to the window — the cargo ships, the cranes at the port, the long sweep of the bridge itself. There's a small toll on the way over; bring your Touch'n'Go card or a few small notes (it's a quick stop, about RM 7 each way).
Once you're on the island, follow signs toward George Town. The bridge spits you out on the eastern coast; you'll round the corner of the island past the heritage core, then pick up Gurney Drive heading north along the seafront. Stay on the coast and it becomes Jalan Tanjong Tokong. Island 88 is a few minutes further — a glass-fronted building set back from the road, with the UFOREA wordmark visible on the upper floors. Door to door, allow 45 minutes on a normal Saturday morning. On a heavy weekend or a public holiday afternoon when the bridge backs up, allow an hour.
The car ferry from Butterworth to George Town is the scenic alternative — slower (about 20 minutes plus boarding), but a lovely experience if you're treating the trip as the outing itself. Once disembarked, you're already in George Town and the drive up to Tanjong Tokong is a familiar fifteen-minute coastal hop.
A whole Saturday on the island, with the bridge as the bookend.
For families coming over from Seberang Perai or the mainland north, the trip usually deserves the whole day. The pattern that works best:
- 8:30 — Set off from home. Light breakfast in the car. Bring the Touch'n'Go for the bridge toll. The earlier you start, the smoother the bridge crossing.
- 9:30 — Coffee stop in George Town. Toh Soon for kopi-and-toast, or one of the cafés on Lebuh Armenian. Stretch the legs, change a nappy, and let the kids get the heritage-shop-window look they like.
- 10:30 – 13:30 — UFOREA, three hours. Long enough for Discovery Cove, Galaxy Zone, Adventure Trails and a quick whiz around Mini Town. The wristband stamp gives you all-day re-entry.
- 13:30 — Lunch out. The cafés at Island 88 do char koay teow, dim sum, Western. Or drive five minutes back into George Town for a heritage lunch.
- 15:30 — One more pass at UFOREA, or head home. Many families come back for a second hour in their favourite zone. Then cross the bridge before peak hour to be home for an early dinner.
- 17:30 — Across the bridge before sunset. The afternoon return is lighter than the morning out. Kids asleep in the back. A good day.
Island 88 has a multi-level car park directly under the building. First hour free, a small flat rate afterwards. Drop-off lane at the lobby — useful after the long bridge drive when everyone needs to spill out of the car at once.
